The Lectric XP4
A folding electric bike trades a little range and a little stiffness for fitting in a hallway cupboard, a car boot or a train vestibule. These run from $799 to $1,899. The thing worth understanding first is that folding solves storage, not carrying, and the two get confused more than any other point in this category. The best folding electric bike here is whichever one you can carry up your own stairs, which is a different question from which one folds smallest. The Lectric XP4 is a folding ebike that undercuts almost everything with comparable numbers. $1,299 ride-away buys 85 Nm of torque, an 840 Wh battery and a quoted 137 km of range. On paper that is more battery than bikes costing twice as much.
It folds in half at the frame and again at the stem, which makes it the obvious answer for flats, campervans, boats and car boots. The catch is what folding does to the weight, and that is worth understanding before you order.
840 Wh at this price is the actual story
Battery capacity is the specification that costs money. An 840 Wh pack on a $1,299 bike is unusual, and it is where most of the value sits. For comparison, plenty of $2,000 city bikes ship with 500 Wh.
What that buys you is not top speed. It is not having to think about charging. On a 20 km round trip you are looking at most of a week between charges at middling assist. Riders who have owned a 400 Wh bike will recognise the difference immediately, because range anxiety is mostly a small-battery problem.
Folding is about storage, not carrying
The XP4 weighs 27.7 kg. Folded, it is a compact object you can wheel into a hallway, drop in a boot or stow under a bench. Folded, it is still 27.7 kg.
That distinction matters more than the fold itself. If your plan is storing the bike in a small space, this works exactly as advertised. If your plan is carrying it up two flights of stairs every evening, the fold does not help you, and you will resent it inside a fortnight.
Rule of thumb: fold for storage and transport, not for lifting.
Small wheels change how it rides
Folding bikes use small wheels, and small wheels feel different. Steering is quicker. Potholes hit harder, because a small wheel drops further into a hole before it climbs out. Nobody mentions this in the spec sheet and everybody notices it in the first mile.
It is not a fault. It is a trade you are making for a bike that folds. On smooth city surfaces it is barely noticeable. On broken back roads at speed it is the main thing you will feel.

- Flat-dwellers and van owners who need the bike to disappear into a small space
- Riders who want a big battery without paying big-battery prices
- Anyone combining a bike with a car, train or boat for part of the trip
Buy something else if
- Anyone carrying the bike up stairs regularly. Folding does not reduce 27.7 kg, and this is the mistake people most often make with folders.
- Riders who spend most of their time on rough surfaces at speed. Small wheels punish potholes and a full-size bike will be more comfortable.
- Anyone who wants the lightest possible folder. This is a big-battery folder, and the battery is most of the weight.
