Folding solves storage. It does not solve weight
This is the mistake people most often make. A folded ebike takes up less space. It weighs exactly the same as it did unfolded, and these bikes run from 26.8 kg to 30.8 kg.
If the bike is going into a boot, a van, a boat or a cupboard, folding is the right answer and works exactly as advertised. If it has to go up two flights of stairs every evening, no folder on this page will make that pleasant, and you want a light non-folding bike instead.
Rule of thumb: fold for storage and transport, lift as little as possible.
Battery size is where the money goes
The Ride1Up Portola at $995 carries 500 Wh. The Lectric XP4 at $1,299 carries 840 Wh for three hundred dollars more. That is the clearest price-to-spec jump in the category and it is worth understanding before you sort by price.
Buy for the trip you actually take. A 10 km commute does not need 840 Wh and the Portola will do it happily for less. A 30 km round trip in winter is a different question, and running out is worse than having carried the extra.
Small wheels ride differently
Folders use small wheels, and small wheels drop further into a pothole before climbing out. Steering is quicker and the ride is firmer. On smooth city surfaces you will barely notice. On broken roads at speed it is the main thing you feel.
The Aventon Sinch 2.5 is the exception here, since it keeps 4-inch fat tyres and folds anyway. That buys comfort and grip on loose ground at the cost of being the heaviest folder we sell at 30.8 kg.

If storage space is your constraint, yes, and nothing else solves it. If you have a garage and a ground floor, a non-folding bike at the same price will be lighter, stiffer and usually better value.
